Pirates dominate on senior day

Southwestern closed their home season with a huge 23-2 win over Centenary College on Saturday. 

The Pirates got out to a rocky start with multiple unforced turnovers in the first five minutes, but after Zack Haligman, assisted by Matthew Montagne, scored with nine minutes to play in the first SU was kick-started and rattled off 14 straight goals extending all the way into the third quarter. 

Centenary scored their first goal with eight minutes to play in the third quarter, but Southwestern responded with four more goals. The Gents added one more just before the end of the third, but the Pirates closed out the game and the win with six goals to arrive at the 24-2 final. 

Southwestern dominated the shot count 60-10 and picked up 58 ground balls to Centenary's 28. Julian Quintero was outstanding at the faceoffs, winning all but five in the game. 

Offensively, the Pirates were led by Matt Amerie who scored seven goals on seven shots and made it look easy at times, tying the SU single game scoring record. Dakota Butler and Haligman both added in three goals. Matthew Montagne added one goal but a team high four assists. 

On the defensive side, Travis Zeiler was the main pickup man on faceoffs with 11 ground balls, setting a new SU single game record. Sean Smith grabbed eight. 

Southwestern improves to 6-8 on the year while Centenary falls to 1-9. SU closes the season on the road facing Colorado College and Whittier in Colorado Springs, Colo. beginning on Saturday, April 25th.
