Wheaton defeats Pirates on soggy home soil

On soggy field after a rain soaked Monday evening, Southwestern men's lacrosse fell 10-4 to Wheaton College.

Wheaton took a quick lead, scoring a pair of goals in the first two and a half minutes to start strong, but Southwestern's defense settled in a held WC scoreless the rest of the quarter. Connor Koper, assisted by Jordan Riggs, scored with 11 minutes to play in the first to pull Southwestern within one, 2-1, at the end of the first.

The Lyons opened the second quarter strong as well, scoring three straight to go up 5-1, but Jackson Timian punched one home with 5:50 remaining in the half to send the Pirates into the locker room trailing 5-2.

A refocused Pirate crew took the field at the start of the third quarter and pulled SU within one goal, 5-4, after goals from Everett Barger and Matt Zagurski with 11 minutes to go.

Wheaton closed the game on a roll, however, and scored five unanswered to arrive at the 10-4 final.

Charlie Fisher was outstanding in goal despite garnering the loss, posting 13 saves. The Pirates trailed 45-19 in shots and committed nine more turnovers in the loss. Fisher also led the Pirates with six ground balls while Jordan Riggs caused three turnovers. Matthew Hillman led the Lyons with two goals and two assists.

Southwestern falls to 4-4 on the year while Wheaton improves to 3-1. SU remains at home to face Wentworth IT on Saturday at 7 pm.
