Late game rally lifts Rhodes past Southwestern

Rhodes posted eight goals in the fourth quarter to defeat Southwestern 17-14 in Memphis on Friday night. The loss drops the Pirates to 1-1 on the year.

Southwestern scored the first two goals of the first quarter, but Rhodes closed the half on a 7-1 run to lead 8-4 at the break.

The Pirates dominated out of halftime, scoring six straight through the third quarter including two each from Matthew Montagne and Dakota Butler. Rhodes was able to sneak one more goal in with a minute and a half to play in the third to close SU's lead to one, 10-9.

Rhodes kicked off the fourth quarter with five straight goals to lead 14-10. Southwestern answered with three goals to pull within one, 14-13. RC's Ryan Fennelly put the Lynx up by two and a minute later Matt Zagurski scored to bring SU within one again, 15-14. Rhodes shut down the Pirates the rest of the way and added one more goal with 1:32 remaining to gain a little breathing room before handing the Pirates the loss.

Southwestern trailed 43-35 in shots while each team committed just five turnovers in the contest. Montagne led the Pirates with three goals and two assists while Zagurski and Jake Ham each had three goals and one assist. Jackson Timian had a team high six ground balls. Rhodes was led by Ryan Fennelly who had eight goals and three assists.

The Pirates remain on the road to face Carthage on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
