GEORGETOWN, Texas – Colorado College scored six goals in the first quarter while holding SU scoreless as Southwestern dropped their second SCAC conference match 14-5.
Colorado College controlled the first half, scoring their first goal less than a minute into the game, and led 6-0 through the first quarter. CC added one more goal to start the second quarter before Southwestern got on the board with a goal from Matthew Montagne. A pair of Tiger goals closed out the first half, sending Southwestern into the locker room down 9-1.
It was a much tighter game to open the second half, but Colorado was first on the board again, this time at the 8:31 mark. Austin Fox, assisted by Tyler Downing, took advantage of a man-up opportunity to pull SU back within eight, 10-2, with 6:52 to play in the third quarter. The teams traded goals the rest of the third, leaving Southwestern trailing by eight, 12-4, heading into the fourth quarter.
Tyler Downing scored less than a minute into the fourth, trying to start a rally for the Pirates, but Colorado College scored on a man-up opportunity themselves with 7:55 left on the clock and added one more for good measure with just over two minutes to play to arrive at the 14-5 final.
Southwestern forced Colorado College into 27 turnovers and committed 24, but picked up five fewer ground balls 33-27. The Pirates also struggled in the center circle, winning just seven of the 23 faceoffs on the afternoon.
The loss drops Southwestern to 5-4 on the year and 0-2 in the SCAC while Colorado College improves to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Southwestern returns home to face Huntingdon College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
