SHREVEPORT, La. - Southwestern men's lacrosse rattled off 11 first quarter goals while the SU defense stalled Centenary's attack as the Pirates rolled to a 24-0 win on Friday night.
Carter Cowan, assisted by Austin Fox, got things going for Southwestern with a goal just 13 seconds into the game, and a steady barrage of goals including three from Jamie Long and Cowan and one each from Fox, Jeremy Tufnell, Matt Zagurski and Nathan Balke allowed the Pirates to get a huge, early lead.
Long kicked off the second quarter with two more goals followed by an unassisted man-up goal by Fox. Alex Micheal posted one on the board before Cowan scored his fourth goal of the game, assisted by Michael Villa. As the first half drew to a close, Southwestern took a comfortable 16-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Southwestern took advantage of their numerous man-up opportunities as all but one goal came with an advantage. Tufnell scored three in the second half, Tyler Downing two, Long one and Cowan two to close out the game for the 24-0 win.
Southwestern had full control of every aspect of the game. They won 21 of 26 faceoffs, successfully cleared all 19 times, took 58 shots while allowing just nine and picked up 54 ground balls.
Charlie Fisher didn't see much action in goal but did record four saves while recording the shutout. Long posted a new Southwestern record for goals in a game with seven, besting his old record of six last season. Cowan scored six goals with four assists while Fox led the Pirates in assists with five. Travis Zeiler and Nick Sivon led Southwestern with seven groundballs each.
The win improves Southwestern to 6-7 on the year and 3-1 in the SCAC while Centenary remains winless with an 0-6 overall record, 0-3 in conference play. SU returns to non-conference play on April 7th facing Huntingdon College at 11 am.
