Steady Goals Defeat Pirates

ARLINGTON, Va. - Marymount College posted at least three goals in each period to defeat Southwestern 13-6 on Saturday to close out their spring break road trip.

The Pirates made a game of it in the first quarter after Marymount scored two quick goals to open. Jamie Long, assisted by Austin Fox, started the scoring with a man-up goal with 9:19 to go in the quarter. Marymount pushed their lead back to two, 3-1, but Jeremy Tufnell scored an unassisted goal with 3:30 to go in the frame to pull Southwestern within one, 3-2, heading into the second quarter.

Marymount took control in the second quarter with three goals to lead by four, 6-2, by halftime.

After another MC goal to open the third, the Pirates began a comeback. Fox scored a man-up goal and Long added his second goal of the game to pull SU within three, 7-4, with eight minutes remaining in the third.

Unfortunately, Marymount was too much as they scored four straight to pull away as the game entered the midway point of the fourth quarter. Carter Cowan scored, assisted by Long, and Fox scored with 1:50 to play to arrive at the 13-6 final.

SU only trailed by 14 in the shot count, 45-31, and committed one more turnover in the loss. Southwestern led in ground balls 40-37, but took advantage of just two of their eight man-up opportunities. Long and Fox led in the scoring with two goals and one assist each. Marymount's Connor Kellogg led all scorers with three goals and one assist.

Southwestern falls to 4-6 with the loss while Marymount improves to 4-1 on the year.  The Pirates return to SCAC conference action next weekend, facing the University of Dallas on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Irving, Texas.
