Second Half Turnaround Hands Pirates Win

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Pirates scored eight second half goals while allowing only four en route to a 12-8 win over Regis College on Thursday evening.

Southwestern took control early with goals by Jamie Long and Austin Fox. Regis got on the board with just under a minute to play in the quarter, but SU's Carter Cowan had the immediate answer, scoring just 20 seconds later to keep the Pirates up by two, 3-1.

Regis mounted a comeback in the second quarter, posting three goals to SU's one in the frame to tie the game 4-4 heading into halftime.

In the early parts of the second half it seemed Regis was going to take control of the game as they scored two goals in the first two minutes of the third quarter. Southwestern wouldn't be outdone, however, as they scored three goals in the third. The Pirates didn't stop there and poured on five goals in the fourth while the defense buckled down to give Southwestern the 12-8 final.

Long scored four goals to lead the charge for the Pirates while Michael Villa, Fox and Tyler Downing all scored two goals. AJ Cole recorded six saves on 14 shots in goal for the Pirates.

SU led in the shot count, 53-21, and also committed eight fewer turnovers 24-16.

The win improves Southwestern to 4-3 on the year while Regis falls to 1-2 on the season. Southwestern continues their homestand on Monday as they face Skidmore at 7 p.m.
