Pirates Dominate Oglethorpe for First Win

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern lacrosse recorded their first win of the season in dominating fashion with an 11-2 win over Oglethorpe University. The Pirates led in every offensive category and led the entire game. 

It took just over a minute for Southwestern to score their first goal. The Pirates won the faceoff and worked the ball around the perimeter before Jamie Long cut through the defense and Connor Smith made a perfect pass to put Southwestern up 1-0. 

Carter Cowan, assisted by Michael Villa, scored three minutes later and Elliot Kelly punched one in unassisted to give Southwestern a 3-0 lead after the first quarter.

Villa started the second frame with an unassisted goal 30 seconds into the period to give the Pirates a four goal lead. Oglethorpe's Jake Godwin was able to sneak through the Pirate defense to give the Stormy Petrels their first goal of the contest and cut SU's lead to three, 4-1. Tyler Downing returned the favor to put Southwestern back up by four and Cameron Metzker recorded an assist on the defensive line after causing a turnover and taking the ball the length of the field, finding Cowan open next to the net to give SU a 6-1 lead at halftime.

Long and Kelly kept the scoring going with bookend goals in the third quarter, pushing Southwestern's lead to a comfortable seven goals, 8-1. Three, fourth quarter goals by the Pirates gave them a season high 11 goals. Oglethorpe placed one in the net with 37 seconds left on the clock to arrive at the 11-2 final.

Southwestern dominated the shot count, taking 35 more shots on the afternoon and was led by Jamie Long's four goals and one assist. Cowan also posted three goals on the day.

Defensively, the Pirates were solid in the backfield. Nick Sivon was all over the field, wreaking havoc on Oglethorpe while recording six ground balls and causing three turnovers, both team highs.  Donnie Murray earned the win with four saves on 11 shots faced. 

With the win Southwestern improves to 1-8 on the season and 1-1 in the SCAC. They remain in conference action and at home to face Rhodes College on Friday evening. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
