Undefeated Drew Tops Pirates

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Drew University handed Southwestern their sixth loss of the season on Monday night. The unbeaten Rangers were too strong for the Pirates as DU controlled every aspect of the game.

Drew posted the first goal of the game three minutes into the first period and Southwestern's Tyler Downing answered quickly to tie the game 1-1. At the end of the first Drew held a slight advantage, 3-1, over the Pirates. The Rangers posted three more goals to start the second quarter before Jamie Long, assisted by Michael Villa, made the count 6-2. Drew's Eric Tripp closed out the half with two goals to send Southwestern into the break down six, 8-2.

Long opened the second half with a goal four minutes in to bring the Pirates within five, 8-3. The Rangers closed out the period with seven unanswered goals to head into the final frame up 15-3.

Villa and Long teamed up for the final two Southwestern goals while Drew matched the effort with two goals of their own to give SU the 17-5 loss.

Drew took 20 more shots on the night (39-19) and picked up 25 more ground balls (55-30). Southwestern committed 12 more turnovers (36-24) on the night and converted on eight fewer clears. Southwestern was also unable to take advantage of the five man-up opportunities while Drew went 1-4.

Long ended with three goals and one assist while Villa posted one goal and two assists. Chris O'Quain and Daniel Ayala each had four ground balls to lead Southwestern while Cameron Metzker caused three turnovers. Andrew Somps led offensively for Drew with four goals and two assists.

Southwestern falls to 0-6 on the year. They remain at home to face Concordia (WI) on Monday at 7pm.
