Pirates Drop Season Opener

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern lacrosse team dropped their season opener to Goucher College 27-7 on a cold, windy and wet afternoon.

After a 30 minute strom delay the two teams got down to business and Goucher came out of the gate strong and led by four goals after the first frame. The Gophers added three more goals in the first two minutes of the second quarter and continued to press and mounted a 14 goal lead at halftime.

The Pirates entered the second half with a new plan that worked as Tyler Downing (pictured) scored the first goal of the year for Southwestern on a man-up opportunity, assisted by Michael Villa.

Goucher added five more before Southwestern got on the board once again. Travis Zeiler picked up a groundball and attacked the goal, putting the ball in the back of the net for SU's second goal, making the count 20-2.

Jamie Long, assisted by Tyler Downing punched one in thirty seconds later and Carter Cowan made it four as he scored with two minutes remaining in the third quarter, assisted by Jamie Long to cut Goucher's lead to 17, 21-4.

Goucher went back on the offensive and scored two more goals before the end of the period, sending SU into the fourth down 19, 23-4.

Two Gopher goals kicked off the fourth then Nathan Balke found Downing, taking advantage of the man-up opportunity. Goucher added two more goals before Cowan scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Connor Smith.

Downing led the attach for the Pirates with two goals and one assist while Cowan notched two goals. Goucher's Kyle Boncaro led for the Gophers with seven goals and two assists.

Nick Sivon posted four ground balls in the loss. Donnie Murray recorded eight saves in 45 minutes in goal while AJ Cole notched four saves in 14 minutes.

Southwestern remains at home to face Fontbonne on February 26th at 11:00 am.
