Pirates Defeat Centre in Conference Opener

The men's lacrosse team opened up conference action with a thrilling 12-10 win over Centre College on Friday afternoon. The win improves the Pirates to 4-5 on the year and 1-0 in the SCAC.

SU's Edward Williams started the scoring off for Southwestern, assisted by Luther Faulk, just two minutes into the game. The Pirates never trailed the rest of the way. Centre attempted a comeback after Thomas Mock scored SU's 12th goal with just over 10 minutes to play. Centre scored two goals within a minute of each other to pull within two, 10-12, but Southwestern stopped the attack to earn the win.

Both teams took 33 shots on the day and committed seven turnovers while Centre took a slight advantage in won faceoffs and groundballs.

The difference came in goal as SU's goalies racked up 17 saves on the afternoon while the Tigers had 13.

Williams led with four goals, converting on all four shots in the contest while Jamie Long also had a four point afternoon with three goals and one assist.

Southwestern remains on the road for SCAC conference action to face Sewanee on Monday.
