Consistent Goals Lift Pirates Past 'Lopes

GEORGETOWN, Texas - On a sunny and windy afternoon the Pirates blew by Grand Canyon University 11-5 with a constant offensive presence, scoring multiple goals in each quarter.

Luther Faulk got things started for Southwestern, scoring off a pass from Alex Michael with 9:43 to play in the first quarter. GCU responded with a goal of their own five minutes later but Edward Williams (pictured) answered with an unassisted goal to put the Pirates up 2-1 after the first quarter.

SU continued to build on their lead as Thomas Mock scored three minutes into the second, assisted by Jamie Long and Edward Williams added another, assisted by Gus Brunger. Grand Canyon pulled within one goal after scoring the last goal of the second quarter and first goal of the second half, just 15 seconds into the new period.

Southwestern stayed just one step ahead of the 'Lopes as the Pirates scored three goals in the third. Grand Canyon had the answer for only two of them before Southwestern shut them down for the remainder of the game, holding them scoreless for the final 14 minutes.

Chris O'Quain was a wall in goal, holding off a steady barrage of shots as the 'Lopes attempted to get back in the game. He recorded 15 saves on the afternoon.

Williams led the way offensively for the Pirates scoring four goals on 10 shots. Jamie Long added 2 goals and 2 assists in the win and Tyler Downing recorded two goals as well. Michael, Faulk and Mock also contributed two assists.
