Fourth Quarter Leads to First Pirate Loss

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport scored four goals in the fourth quarter and held SU to just one as the Pirates lost their first game of the season on the road on Friday night.

It was an even contest through most of the first quarter until CNU struck first with the only goal of the period with seven minutes remaining to take a 1-0 lead early.

The captains scored again at the outset of the second half before Edward Williams put the Pirates on the board with a goal with 8:45 to go until halftime. CNU's Glaser scored his second goal of the game to put SU's deficit back at two, 3-1, but the Pirates took advantage of a man up situation. Jamie Long found Gus Brunger for a goal just 30 seconds later to bring Southwestern within one, 3-2, with under eight to play until half.

Glaser assisted on a goal by Koster giving the Captains a 4-2 lead heading into halftime.

Southwestern struck first in the second half when Long scored unassisted. CNU rattled off three straight goals to pull ahead by four, 7-3, but Lont and Williams joined forces again, scoring just before the horn sounded to end the third period to pull Southwestern within three, 7-4.

Williams logged another goal just as the fourth quarter got underway but CNU closed out the game with four unanswered goals to win 11-5.

The Captains dominated in shot count 61-16 while scooping up 48 ground balls to SU's 21. Southwestern converted on 14 of their 23 clears while CNU were 14-15.

Chris O'Quain (pictured) was kept busy in goal and notched 22 saves on the evening. Williams led the way offensively with three goals while Long notched one goal and two assists.

The loss drops Southwestern to 1-1 on the year. They face Randolph Macon College on Sunday in Virginia at 11am CST.
