Lacrosse Shatters Record Book In Home Opener Win

GEORGETOWN, Texas- The Pirates rewrote the record book at Southwestern in their 24-2 season opener win at home against the University of Dallas. Southwestern was led by Carter Cowan who recorded four goals and eight assists in this first collegiate appearance.

UD came out of the gates strong, scoring one minute into the contest to take an early 1-0 lead. Thomas Mock and Cowan teamed up for two straight goals as the Pirates pulled ahead 2-1 before putting the scoring into overdrive. SU rattled off six goals in the opening quarter and added nine in the second quarter to take a 15-1 lead into halftime.

Things cooled off for the Pirates in the third as they scored just three goals, but Southwestern's sensational, suffocating defense kept the Crusaders in check and held them scoreless for another quarter.

SU had an 18-1 lead heading into the fourth and could have put it in cruise control, but instead opted to switch into a higher gear and added six more goals in the period. UD managed to sneak one past goalie Chris O'Quain in the final frame, but the Pirates held strong for the win.

Behind Cowan's four goals were Jamie Long, Edward Williams, Gus Brunger, Tyler Downing and Thomas Mock who all recorded three goals. Michael Villa added two and Jeremy Tufnell, Alex Michael and Luther Faulk (pictured) all had one. Faulk also posted five assists in the win.

Defensively, O'Quain recorded 10 saves in the contest to earn his first win of the season.

Southwestern dominated in every statistical category, taking 63 shots and holding UD to 19 while picking up 31 more groundballs than the Crusaders.

The Pirates head out on a road trip to face Christopher Newport on February 25th at 7pm.
