Pirates Rout McMurry in First ASC Contest

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Making their maiden voyage into their new waters, the American Southwest Conference, the Southwestern Pirates stymied the McMurry War Haws 56-12 Saturday evening at Birkelbach Field.

The Pirates set school records for points in a game (56), points in a half (35), rushing yardage (500), rushing attempts (74), average gain per rush (6.8) and held McMurry to 76 yards on the ground. Junior quarterback Frederick Hover led the offensive attack with 23 rushes for 134 yards and a pair of scores and went 9-for-14 through the air for 113 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Freshman running back Elijah Smith ran the ball 13 times for 135 yards and a pair of scores. Freshman Jaxon Borowski continued his outstanding receiving performance with three catches for 59 yards and a score. Freshman David Brandenburg caught a pair of passes for 20 yards and a touchdown as well. Joining Smith and Hover with over 100 yards rushing was sophomore running back Devin Shaw with 22 touches for 154 yards and a score.

Defenisve leaders were sophomore linebacker Christopher Crawford with nine tackles (two solo, seven assists), sophomore defensive back Hayden Smith tallied seven tackles (two solo, five assists), and senior linebacker Joshua Scoggin with six tackles including 1.5 sacks for -8 yards. Senior cornerbacks Nik Kelly and DeeJay Johnson each came up with an interception. Kelly returned four punts for 38 yards and a pair of kickoffs for 83 yards with a long of 55.

Southwestern will be back at home on September 16th as they host East Texas Baptist. Kickoff at Birkelbach Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
