As we head toward the Southwestern University football season opener on Sept. 5, at Hardin-Simmons, we will preview the squad, by position. Today, we take a look at the defensive backs with co-defensive coordinator Bill Kriesel.

Aug. 27 – Offensive line

Aug. 29 – Running backs
Aug. 30 – Linebackers
Aug. 31 – Wide receivers/tight ends
Sept. 1 – Defensive backs
Sept. 2 – Special teams
Sept. 3 – Quarterbacks

Led by a pair of outstanding sophomore cornerbacks – Nik Kelly and DeeJay Johnson – the Pirates' defensive back unit is one that will continue to shine this season.

Kelly earned SCAC Newcomer of the Year laurels last season after leading the league with six interceptions.

In addition to the cornerbacks, Kriesel is counting on safeties AJ McCort, who led the team in tackles last year, and Taylor Fann to again be difference makers.
