Southwestern football position preview: Running backs

As we head toward the Southwestern University football season opener on Sept. 5, at Hardin-Simmons, we will preview the squad, by position. Today, we talked with running backs coach Chad Ellis. Below is a schedule of the position previews.

Aug. 27 – Offensive line
Aug. 28 – Defensive line
Aug. 29 – Running backs
Aug. 30 – Linebackers
Aug. 31 – Wide receivers/tight ends
Sept. 1 – Defensive backs
Sept. 2 – Special teams
Sept. 3 – Quarterbacks

The running backs return a 1-2 punch in the form of juniors Justin Pelt and Dylan Wilburn.

Pelt, who was forced into action at the quarterback position last season, finished second on the team with 304 rushing yards on 100 carries.

Meanwhile, Wilburn was an honorable-mention All-SCAC selection after ranking fourth in the league with 585 all-purpose yards, including 540 on the ground, and a team-high six touchdowns.

In addition to Pelt and Wilburn, Ellis mentioned Cris Pringle as an explosive threat out of the backfield.
