Kelly highlights All-SCAC selections

First-year Nik Kelly, a defensive back from Houston, Texas, has been named the SCAC Newcomer of the Year in exclusive voting by the head coaches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Four earned First Team selections and four were named Honorable Mention All-SCAC.

Kelly had an outstanding freshman season for the Pirates, leading the SCAC in both passes defended with 19 (tied for third in the nation) and interceptions with six – despite some games in which he faced zero pass attempts. In addition, he was second in the league in pass break‐ups with 13 and also chipped in with 42 tackles, including 24 solo efforts. The versatile Kelly also made his mark as a punt returner and a receiver for the Pirates. He returned eight punts for 39 yards and caught two passes during the 2014 season – taking both of them to the house on scoring plays of 38 and 42 yards. Kelly is just the second defensive back and first since 2011 to earn SCAC Newcomer‐of‐the‐Year honors. He was also a First Team All-SCAC pick.

Joining Kelly on the All-SCAC First Team Defense was defensive end Justin Broussard. The 6-1, 235-pound sophomore from Beaumont, Texas, was second in the SCAC in sacks (6) and sack yards (43). He ranked 10th in the league in assists with 30 and 12th in solo tackles (28) and tackles (58). Broussard had a season-high 10 tackles and two sacks in SU's 27-20 win over Sul Ross State on September 13th. This is Broussard's second First Team All-SCAC selection.

Two wide receivers were selected All-SCAC First Team Offense. Matt Gillen, a 6-2, 195-pound sophomore from Coppell, Texas, earned his second First Team pick after leading the conference in yards per game, averaging 81.3 per contest. Gillen was third in yards per catch (13.9), yards (569) and receptions (41) and ranked fifth in the conference in touchdowns with three on the year. Two times this season, Gillen eclipsed 100-yards receiving including a 146 yard performance against Austin College on November 1st with a season-high 11 receptions.

Micah Sherman earns his first All-SCAC selection this season. The 6-0, 170-pound sophomore from Justin, Texas, led the Pirates and the SCAC in receptions with 44. His 584 yards ranked him second in the league while his 64.9 yards per game and four touchdowns were both third in the conference. Sherman also had two 100+ yard games receiving with a season-high 120 yards against Austin College on November 1st.

Bryan Hicks, Dylan Wilburn, Taylor Fann and DeeJay Johnson all earned their first All-SCAC Honorable Mention selections.

Hicks, a 6-0, 180-pound first-year quarterback from Humble, Texas, was third in the SCAC in touchdowns with 11 and fourth in nearly every other category in his first season with the Pirates, despite missing five games this season. He had a season-high 334 yards in the November 1st game against Austin College and posted four touchdowns against Sul Ross State.

A 5-7, 205-pound running back from Houston, Texas, Wilburn led the Pirates in rushing yards with 540 and was third in the SCAC in yards per game, averaging 77.1. He posted six touchdowns this season, fifth most in the conference, including a season-high two touchdowns against Austin College.

Fann, a 5-11, 175-pound sophomore defensive back from McKinney, Texas, ranked second in the SCAC in interceptions with five on the year, including three against Trinity on November 8th. He was 12th in solo tackles at 28 and posted a season-high four pass breakups against Trinity on October 18th.

Johnson, a 6-3, 160-pound first-year defensive back from Humble, Texas, was 29th in the SCAC in solo tackles and in the top 50 in assists, tackles and tackles per game. He has a season-high five tackles against Sul Ross State.

Southwestern closed their second season with an overall record of 1-8.
