THE GAME
Southwestern will renew its second most-played rivalry Saturday when the Pirates travel to Austin College. As both teams search for their first victory of the year, volumes of history surround the rivalry between the Pirates and Kangaroos.
Although Austin leads the all-time series, the one game lead is an accurate dictation of the history between the two teams. A series that started with back-to-back ties in 1909 and 1910 the longest winning streak for either team only reached four games in the 28 previous meetings.
THE SERIES
This will be the 28th meeting all-time between the Pirates and Austin College as the Kangaroos hold a slim 13-12-3 lead in the series 2-1.
THE COACHES
Joe Austin (Concordia-St. Paul '01)
Austin is in his fifth year as a head coach after spending the previous four seasons at Hanover College where he led the Panthers to back-to-back second place finishes in the HCAC. He was also the offensive coordinator at the University of Dubuque after spending time at Augsburg College and his alma mater, Concordia-St. Paul.
Loren Dawson (Arizona State '93)
Dawson returned to Austin College in 2010 where he previously served as the Kangaroos defensive coordinator. Prior to his return to Austin, Dawson spent two seasons at NCAA II Colorado School of Mines coaching special teams and linebackers. His first stint on the Kangaroos coaching staff began in 2002 where he served under David Norman and Ronnie Gage through 2007.
SLICING AND DICING
Southwestern continues to move the ball easily on offense through the air ranking 2nd (only behind TLU who has just played two games) in the SCAC. The Pirates have thrown for 1,083 yards and average 270 ypg ahead of Austin College 267 ypg. SU also threw for more than 300 yards as Dante Smith and Austin Rainer combined for 357 yards vs. Hendrix College.
MORE SHEA
Colten Shea continues to be the Pirates go-to-receiver. Shea now has 31 catches for over 500 yards receiving ranking fourth in the nation and leading the SCAC with 126 ypg. Shea was also named SCAC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after pulling 13 catches for 175 yards and three touchdowns against Hendrix.
MOVING THE CHAINS
Southwestern ranks in the top 50 in NCAA III and is second in the SCAC in first downs. Although first downs do not equal points, the Pirates have proved they can move the ball gaining first downs. On the flip side the Pirates have not been as successful in the red zone converting on 9-of-14 scoring chances (64%) and just 7-of-14 (50%) on touchdowns this year.
1ST QUARTER STRUGGLES
Getting off to a slow start has hindered the Pirates through the early portion of the schedule. Although the Pirates proved they can fight back as they did last week to take the lead in the second half, Southwestern has not scored in the first while opponents have combined for 41 first quarter points. Southwestern has scored 26 second quarter points and 21 third quarter points, but obviously playing from behind is tough.
RECORD BREAKER
Wide Receiver Colten Shea broke one SCAC record and nearly a second as the Pirates made their highly anticipated football return against Texas Lutheran. Shea set a single-game record for all-purpose yards with 367 yards after finishing the night with 258 yards receiving and 109 yards on six kickoff returns. He was nine yards shy of the SCAC single-game mark for receiving yards as he had scores of 68-yards and 40-yards.
A WIN FOR THE PIRATES…
A win for the Pirates would give Southwestern its first win of 2013 and even the all-time series with Austin at 13-13-3 … Southwestern would pick up its first road win of the season … it would make the Pirates 155-207-35 all-time
A LOSS FOR THE PIRATES…
A loss would be the Pirates fifth of the season and move their record to 0-5 … it would make the Pirates 14-12-3 all-time vs. Austin College … It would also make the Pirates 154-208-35 all-time
A LOOK AHEAD …
Southwestern returns home for its final three home games of 2013 … The Pirates also host fellow first-year program and NAIA member Oklahoma Baptist who enters this week at 0-4 … The Pirates will also host Trinity and Austin College as only the Nov. 2 at home and Nov. 9 meeting in San Antonio will serve as official SCAC games between the teams … Homecoming will also be the Pirates final home game of 2013 Nov. 3 vs. Austin College … Southwestern ends its season with its final two games on the road at Trinity (Nov. 9) and Southern Virginia (Nov. 16)
PIRATE WALK
The Pirate football team will make their weekly walk through the designated tailgating area two hours prior to kickoff for each home game. Head Coach Joe Austin and the team will continue from the west end of the tailgating area to the locker room area. Fans are encouraged to gather along this area to wish the Pirates 'Good Luck' in their upcoming game.
GAME DAY TICKETS (Updated 9/16/13)
Tickets will be sold at the Georgetown ISD Stadium for $8 per person. Children 2 years old and younger do not need a ticket. Seating will begin 90 minutes prior to kick-off for each home game. ALL tickets will be open for Southwestern football games. The gate located at the west entrance under the press box will be the only pass gate for football parents with passes, credentialed media members and VIP passes.
TAILGATING INFO
Socialize with friends prior to each home game at the Georgetown ISD Stadium parking lot in the designated tailgating area. Tailgating will begin at noon for 7 p.m. kick-off and 8 a.m. for 1 p.m. kick-off at each home game. Official tailgating policies can be found here.
One tailgate spot is $10 (or two for $15) - cash only please - and can be reserved on a first come, first served basis. Each tailgater must have a game day ticket, which can be purchased upon arrival for tailgating.
