THE GAME

The Pirates will face fellow first-year program Hendrix College (1-1) as Southwestern (0-3) continues to look for its first win of 2013. As the Pirates continue to grow the, the defense has continued to step-up to the challenge and Saturday against the Warriors will be no different.

Southwestern will look to stop another fast-paced spread offense as the Warriors average 458 yards of total offense per game. While Hendrix earned its first win on a last-second field goal in week one, the Warriors' offense will again test the Pirate defense which ranks first in the SCAC in sacks.

THE SERIES

This will be the fourth meeting all-time between the Pirates and Hendrix College as the Warriors lead the series 2-1. Hendrix won the last meeting between the schools, 3-2, Nov. 11, 1924.

THE COACHES

Joe Austin (Concordia-St. Paul '01)

Austin is in his fifth year as a head coach after spending the previous four seasons at Hanover College where he helped lead the Panthers to back-to-back second place finishes in the HCAC. He was also the offensive coordinator at the University of Dubuque after spending time at Augsburg College and his alma mater, Concordia-St. Paul.

Buck Buchanan (Austin College '98)

Buchanan was tabbed to lead the Warriors as they bring back football in 2013 for the first time since 1960. Buchanan helped Louisiana College restart its football program in 1999 and served as the associate head coach from 2006-11 before leaving to take over at Hendrix. He also has familiarity with the SCAC as he was standout defensive lineman at Austin College receiving his degree in 1998.

SACK ATTACK

The Pirates currently lead the SCAC in sacks as the Southwestern defense has recorded a league high 7 sacks. Justin Broussard leads the way with 3.5 sacks  - which is also tops individually in the SCAC – while Tyler Frisby has recorded 2.0 sacks this season.

MORE SHEA

While a number of wide receivers have been injured the attention on Colten Shea hasn't held the local receiver from averaging 110 yards per game. His mark is one of only two receivers in the SCAC to average over 100 yards through week three (Cameron Peavy is averaging 119ypg, but has only played two games).

WIDE OPEN SPACES

While Colten Shea has carried the load at wide receiver, he is starting to get more help as receivers continue to come off the early season IR. In last week's game vs. East Texas Baptist, five different receivers caught multiple passes with seven players catching at least one pass. While Shea was the high target at six, Dylan Wilburn caught four passes out of the backfield and Taylor Stephens add four catches as well.

1ST QUARTER STRUGGLES

Getting off to a slow start has hindered the Pirates through the early portion of the schedule. SU has been held scoreless in the first quarter as opponents have scored a combined 27 first quarter points. Southwestern has scored 17 second quarter points and 14 third quarter points, but obviously playing from behind has been tough.

RECORD BREAKER

Wide Receiver Colten Shea broke one SCAC record and nearly a second as the Pirates made their highly anticipated football return against Texas Lutheran. Shea set a single-game record for all-purpose yards with 367 yards after finishing the night with 258 yards receiving and 109 yards on six kickoff returns. He was nine yards shy of the SCAC single-game mark for receiving yards as he had scores of 68-yards and 40-yards.

A WIN FOR THE PIRATES…

A win for the Pirates would give Southwestern its first win of 2013 and a 2-2 all-time record vs. Hendrix … Southwestern would pick up its first road win of the season … it would make the Pirates 155-206-35 all-time

A LOSS FOR THE PIRATES…

A loss would be the Pirates fourth of the season and move their record to 0-4 … it would make the Pirates 3-1 all-time vs. Hendrix … It would also make the Pirates 154-207-35 all-time

A LOOK AHEAD …

Southwestern continues its road trip as the Pirates return to SCAC action at Austin College … The Pirates and Kangaroos are both winless entering this week's game while Austin is at Trinity the game could be a match-up of teams looking for their first win …After this week the Pirates still have one first-year football program on their schedule, Oklahoma Baptist …Oklahoma Baptist currently sits at 0-3 in their first year (more on SU opponents on pg 8) … Homecoming for the Pirates has also been set for Nov. 2 vs. Austin College, the second meeting against AC … The Pirates will play three conference games this season, as their Nov. 2 game vs. Austin College and Nov. 9 meeting at Trinity will not count as official SCAC games
