The SU men's basketball team shot just 30.4 percent in its first round game of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament and fell to the Centre College Colonels by a score of 63-43 on Friday (Feb. 23) in Memphis, TN.
The Pirates fell behind early against the Colonels with Centre extending its lead to double-digits less than six minutes in to the game on Matt Nestheide's fifth three-pointer of the half. The Colonels led by as many as 22 in the half after a three-pointer made the score 41-19 with 2:34 on the clock.
SU fell behind by as many as 28 with 10:52 left in the game. Sophomore Andrew McDonald (Austin, TX/Westwood HS) made a pair of layups late in the half to pull the Pirates within 17 but CC's Kameron McRay hit a three to make the final score 63-43.
Junior Mike Powell (Houston, TX/Episcopal HS) led the team in scoring with 11 points on 4-9 shooting. He also tied for a game-high with six rebounds and had one assist. First-year Travis Barber (Houston, TX/Klein HS) recorded eight points for the Bucs and grabbed three rebounds.
McDonald had six points on 3-5 shooting along with two blocks and three rebounds. Sophomore Micah Salinas (San Antonio, TX/Highlands HS) added seven points for SU.
The Pirates shot just 30.4 percent while the Colonels shot 41.8 percent from the floor and 48 percent from beyond the three-point arc. Rebounds were close with Centre holding a slight 38-37 edge.
Southwestern closes the season with an 11-15 overall record. Centre goes on to play Millsaps College on Saturday (Feb. 24) in the second round.
