On Friday (Feb. 1) evening in Georgetown, TX, the Southwestern men's basketball team scored a season-low 34 points in a 20-point loss to SCAC foe DePauw University.
The game remained close throughout the first half with the Pirates leading a majority of the time. The largest lead for SU was four, which the Pirates took at the 6:26 mark on a jumper from junior Andrew McDonald (Austin, TX/Westwood HS). The lead did not stick as the game went to the half tied at 17-17.
In the second stanza, the Pirates built a 28-21 lead with 12:32 left before things turned for the worst. 10 and a half minutes later, the Tigers had gone on a 30-4 run for a 51-32 lead and eventually downed the Pirates 54-34.
Sophomore Travis Barber (Houston, TX/Klein HS) led the team with nine points on 3-8 shooting. He was 1-4 from three-point range and just 2-5 from the free throw line. Anthony Cox (Flower Mound, TX/Flower Mound HS) was a perfect 3-3 from the field for seven points. Matt Caplan (Houston, TX/University of Kansas), Zach Bergstrom (La Vernia, TX/La Vernia HS) and Jonathan Brown (Houston, TX/Jersey Village HS) all pulled down five rebounds for SU.
The loss sends the Pirates to an 8-10 season record and a 4-5 mark in the SCAC. DePauw is now 15-4 and 7-2 in conference play.
Southwestern hosts #11 Centre College on Saturday (Feb. 2) in Georgetown at 8:00 pm.
