Southwestern Falls by Seven at SCAC Foe Oglethorpe

Senior Mike Powell (Houston, TX/Episcopal HS) scored a game-high 20 points but it was not enough as the SU Pirates lost to Oglethorpe University on Saturday (Jan. 26) evening in Atlanta, GA.

Powell connected on 9-16 from the floor, 1-4 from beyond the three-point arc and 1-1 from the free throw line while also dishing out five assists. Junior Andrew McDonald (Austin, TX/Westwood HS) was a perfect 6-6 from the floor and also made 2-3 from the charity stripe for 14 points.

The difference in the game came on the boards, with OU holding a sizeable 47-28 advantage. The other deciding factor was free throws, with the Stormy Petrels reaching the line 36 times and making 23 of their attempts. Southwestern was just 6-14 from the free throw line. SU only turned the ball over 13 times in the game while forcing Oglethorpe into 17 turnovers. The Pirates shot 43.6 percent (24-55) from the floor.

Southwestern's record now stands at 8-9 on the year and 4-4 in the SCAC. The Stormy Petrels upped their record to 11-6 and 6-2 in the conference.

The Pirates return home for their next six contests, beginning with Depauw University on Friday (Feb. 1) at 8:00 pm in Georgetown.
