Four SU men's basketball players reached double-digits in points as the Pirates defeated the Sewanee Tigers in Sewanee, TN by a score of 78-58 for their first road win of the season on Friday (Jan. 25) night.
The Pirates jumped ahead 4-0 at the start of the game and never trailed. The Tigers pulled within one at 17:45 and just over five minutes later, SU was leading by 10. The Pirates took a 16-point lead in to the half and their largest lead of the game was 20 which came at the end of the game with a pair of free throws by first-year Ryan Bill (Spring, TX/Oak Ridge HS).
Sophomore Zach Bergstrom (La Vernia, TX/La Vernia HS) continued his strong play with a team-leading 16 points on 5-8 shooting from the floor, 2-4 from the three-point line and 4-5 from the charity stripe. Senior Mike Powell (Houston, TX/Episcopal HS) pitched in with 15 points on 7-8 shooting while also dishing out four assists.
Junior Andrew McDonald (Austin, TX/Westwood HS) and senior Miles Elsey (Wimberley, Tx/Wimberley HS) both scored 12 while Matt Caplan (Houston, TX/University of Kansas) had nine points and six assists.
As a team, SU held a large 46-30 advantage on the boards and committed 18 turnovers. The Pirates shot 50.8 percent (30-59) from the floor and 86.7 percent (13-15) from the free throw line.
The Pirates improve to 8-8 for the year and 4-3 in the SCAC while Sewanee drops to 5-11 and remain winless in the conference at 0-7.
Southwestern takes on Oglethorpe University at 8:00 pm in Atlanta, GA on Saturday (Jan. 26).
