The SU men's basketball team traveled to Jackson, MS on Friday (Jan. 4) to resume SCAC play but dropped a 66-57 decision to the Millsaps College Majors.
The Pirates never led in the game with the last tied score being 4-4. Southwestern fell behind quickly and trailed by 18 at the half. Millsaps led by 20 with 4:05 left in the game but the Pirates managed to outscore the Majors 13-2 in the final minutes.
Sophomore forward Ross Hayes (Houston, TX/Clements HS) led the way for SU with 13 points on 5-9 shooting. Hayes also pulled down five rebounds. Goran Stojcic (Houston, TX/Stratford HS) finished the game with 11 points and a team-high eight boards.
Ben Schleif (San Antonio, TX/Reagan HS), a senior guard, also had 11 points along with five steals and three assists. The Pirates, as a team, held a huge 46-29 advantage in rebounds. SU shot itself in the foot by turning the ball over 24 times and causing just 12 turnovers.
Southwestern shot 20-55 (36.4 percent) from the field and just 25 percent (5-20) from three-point range. The Majors shot at a 44.1 percent (26-59) clip from the floor.
The loss brings the Pirates season record to 5-6 while they move to 2-1 in the conference. Millsaps improves to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in the SCAC.
The Pirates travel to Conway, AR for a Sunday (Jan. 6) game at 2:00 pm against Hendrix College.
