Southwestern edged out at home 77-72

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Despite committing just 10 turnovers the Pirates were defeated by the University of Dallas 77-72 Saturday afternoon. 

It was evident early this game was going to be hotly contested as the lead pinballed back-and-forth throughout the first half. Dallas posted their largest lead of the half, just six points, with 44 seconds remaining and took a five point lead into the break, 36-31. 

Ryan Wheeler's three early in the second half brought Southwestern within four, 38-34, and SU took the lead on Joel Martinez's floater with 15:18 to go. The Pirates held onto the lead until going over four minutes without a field goal, allowing Dallas to build a slight advantage. Trenton Garrett's jumper with 6:52 remaining tied the game at 62 and setup the tight finish. 

Kyle Howard hit a layup with just over five minutes remaining to give Southwestern the lead again, 67-66, but it was short-lived as UD embarked on a 9-0 run through the next four minutes. 

Brandon Alexander led Southwestern with 14 points while Jake Holmes and Ryan Wheeler added in 13 each. UD's Darrius Colvin led all scorers with 20 points. Alexander also led on the glass, posting 9 boards while Howard logged four steals. 

The Pirates drop to 8-11 on the year and 4-4 in the SCAC and return to the road to face Texas Lutheran University on Tuesday in a crucial SCAC contest.
