Pirates Can't Slow Down Howard Payne in Road Loss

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Southwestern University men's basketball team could not slow the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets on their home floor as the Pirates fell 86-73 on Saturday afternoon at the Brownwood Coliseum. 

Howard Payne shot 31 of 58 (53%) from the field and 12 of 22 (55%) from 3-point range. The Yellow Jackets got to the line 19 times, making 12 (63%). On the other end, Southwestern shot 28 of 66 (42%) from the field and 4 of 19 (21%) from deep. Southwestern was 13 of 19 from the line (68%).

The Pirates were outrebounded 41-33 despite only turning the ball over 13 times. Southwestern forced 17 turnovers 

It was a back-and-forth affair in the first eight mintues before the Pirates opened up a seven point lead, 20-13. Howard Payne stormed back to tie it at 22 with eight minutes to play and the two teams continued to trade baskets as the game was tied at 28. Howard Payne outscored Southwestern 10-4 in the final three minutes to take a 38-32 lead into the break.

The Pirates came out hot in the second half, cutting the deficit to one before a 9-2 run put Howard Payne back ahead 52-44. Southwestern cut it back down to 54-48 before an 18-6 run blew the game wide open as the Yellow Jackets opened up a 72-54 lead with eight minutes remaining in the game.

Southwestern tried to come up with a run of their own, even cutting it under 10 with 2:30 to play, but it would not be enough as Howard Payne's hot shooting led them to the 13-point win.

Senior Ryan Ogden scored 18 points on 6 of 11 shooting to go with seven boards and a steal while sophomore Ryan Wheeler scored 15 on 4 of 8 shooting including a pair of 3-pointers. Freshman William Pendygraft scored 11 points and pulled down five rebounds off the bench in only eight minutes of play.

Sophomore Luke Hicks scored eight points to go with seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Sophomore Brandon Alexander scored nine to go with two steals while sophomore Kyle Howard has three steals off the bench.

Southwestern moves to 2-4 overall and will return to action next Saturday as they hit the road for a 6 PM matchup in Belton with Mary Hardin-Baylor.
