Pirates topped by Bulldogs to close regular season play

SEGUIN, Texas – Southwestern men's basketball closed the regular season on the road Friday evening, falling 95-89 to Texas Lutheran University.

Texas Lutheran had the lead for most of the first half, but it was Southwestern that led at the break 47-42 as Ryan Ogden drained a three with seconds left in the half.

SU went up by as many as ten early in the second half, but TLU stormed back and eventually took the lead with just over ten minutes to play.

That lead held up until Southwestern began to attack the rim and eventually evened the count 80-80 on Zach Whitlock's layup with 3:47 remaining. Whitlock was fouled on the play and sank the ensuing free throw to put SU up 81-80.

A three by TLU's Alex Cage put the Bulldogs up two, 85-83 with 2:21 to go and was just enough of a lead that the Pirates could not catch up as the clock wound out, allowing TLU to close the game from the free throw line.

Ogden led SU with 25 points and eight rebounds while Zach Whitlock added 17 and Chris Molina 16.

The Pirates (13-12, 8-6) should finish the regular season in fourth place overall but could drop to the #5 seed if Trinity defeats Schreiner in Saturday's contest. SCAC Championship brackets will be announced Monday.
