Southwestern defeats Kenyon 84-70 to open 2017

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Pirates scored 23 points off turnovers while shooting over 50% from the field in an 84-70 win over Kenyon College Monday.

Kenyon briefly led one minute into the contest but the Pirates went on a 21-7 run over the next seven minutes to lead by 13, 23-10, and led by 11 at the break 45-34.

At the start of the second half Kenyon went on a run in large part due to second chance opportunities as they grabbed nine rebounds in the first eight minutes and cut into Southwestern's lead. With 8:37 to go the Pirates' advantage was down to five, 64-59. Another scoring burst put SU's lead back to double digits, 75-61 with just under five to go.

Southwestern cruised the rest of the way, leading by as many as 17 in the final two minutes before the final horn sounded.

Zach Whitlock led all scorers with 22 points on 8-12 shooting, adding in two assists, two steals and one block. Ben Stiver added 14 points, Ryan Ogden 13 with a team-high seven boards while Luke Hicks and Kyle Howard chipped in 12 points and 11 points, respectively. Howard added team-highs in assists (6) and steals (4).

SU committed just seven turnovers in the win while forcing the Lords into 15.

Southwestern (5-6) returns to the road to open Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday, facing the University of Dallas on Friday at 7:30 pm in Irving, Texas.
