Pirates advance to semifinals with double OT thriller

Pirates advance to semifinals with double OT thriller

Southwestern had a huge defensive stand to force the game into overtime and got hot offensively in the second overtime to take an 81-76 win over Schreiner to advance to the semifinals in the SCAC Conference Championship.

The Pirates set the stage early with tough defense, holding the Mountineers scoreless in the first seven and a half minutes of action. Schreiner battled back to get within six points by halftime as Southwestern lead 29-23 at the break.

Less than four minutes into the second half Schreiner had completed the comeback and took the lead 32-31. The lead bounced back and forth before Schreiner went up by five from the free throw line, 55-50, with 7:27 to play.

With less than a minute to play, Adrian Johnson hit a tough layup to tie the game once again. After the Mountaineer timeout, Schreiner wasn't allowed a good look at the basket and was forced to take a tough three point shot from the wing. SU secured the rebound just as the final buzzer sounded to force overtime.

A pair of free throws from Zach Whitlock gave Southwestern the lead 61-59 and added two more on the next possession. Schreiner then took the lead briefly from the free throw line, but Johnson got the lead back for the Pirates from the charity stripe. Guerrero hit a jumper to tie the game again and the game rolled into double overtime as Johnson's last second layup rimmed out.

Southwestern started the second overtime well as Chris Molina hit a jumper to open the frame. Schreiner matched the effort but Molina's three and Scott's jumper put the Pirates up by five, 73-68 with 1:41 to go. The Pirates executed well down the stretch to seal the win 81-76.

The Pirates shot 44.8% from the floor but just 22.2% from three point range and were outrebounded 44-38 but committed seven fewer turnovers. Ryan Ogden led the Pirates with 13 points while Molina added in 12 and Johnson 11. Schirener's Stevan Guerrero led all scorers with 20 points.

The Pirates improve to 14-10 on the year and advance to the semifinals where they will face #2 seed Centenary College on Saturday at 7 p.m.
