Pirates edged out by Dallas

Southwestern was held to just 33.3% from the field and 14.3% from three point range to fall 67-63 to the University of Dallas at home on Friday night.

The first five minutes of the game set the tone for the rest of the contest and the teams traded baskets. After eight lead changes and seven ties in the first half alone, Dallas took a slight 36-33 lead into the locker room.

Southwestern's robust offense was held to just 30.3% from the floor and 20% from three point range while Dallas shot 48.1% from the field and 40% from long range.

SU was slow to start in the second half, but rallied back to take the lead 46-42 with 15 minutes to play. Southwestern held onto the slight advantage until 10:38 on the clock when Anthony Johnson hit the second of two free throws to tie the game for the ninth time, 50-50.

The Pirates went six minutes without a field goal to fall behind 58-51 with 7:42 to play, but rallied back to pull within two, 58-56 with six minutes remaining. Dallas was able to close out the game as SU went cold again, scoring just two field goals in the final six minutes.

Southwestern posted just 11 turnovers in the loss but were outrebounded 41-36. Zach Whitlock led with 14 points on 5-8 shooting while Travis Kurtz added in 13. Mark Promberger led Dallas with 14 points on 5-6 shooting from the floor and 4-6 from the free throw line.

With the loss, SU falls to 11-6 on the year and 5-3 in the SCAC. They remain at home to face Austin College on Saturday at 6 p.m.
