Huge defensive effort leads to SCAC win

Southwestern allowed just two points in the first six and a half minutes of the game en route to an 81-68 win over Colorado College on Friday night at the Robertson Center.

Zach Whitlock was outstanding early, scoring eight of SU's first 11 points in the opening four minutes.  The Pirates continued their lockdown defense the entire first half and took a 22 point lead, 46-24 into the locker room. SU allowed just seven Tiger field goals in the frame and held them to below 30% from the field while shooting 55.6% from the floor and 50% from three point range.

Colorado steadily chipped away at the Pirates' lead and got as close as 16 with seven minutes remaining. That is as close as Southwestern would allow them as the Pirates closed out the game for the 81-68 win.

SU ended the game shooting 47.3% from the field and 40.9% from three point range while holding CC to 38.6% on the night and 42.9% from long range. Six Pirates were in double figures, led by Travis Kurtz with 16 points. Blake Scott added in 15, Chris Lee 14, Ryan Ogden 13 and Chris Molina and Zach Whitlock ten each. Chris Lesnansky led Colorado College with 24 points.

The Pirates also won the battle of the boards, 43-31, and posted nine steals on the afternoon.

Southwestern improves to 6-5 on the season and 1-1 in the SCAC while Colorado College falls to 6-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Pirates remain at home to face Centenary College on Saturday at 6 p.m.
