Pirates fall to Mountaineers 70-57

KERRVILLE, Texas – Schreiner took control in the second half after a back-and-forth battle in the first as Southwestern dropped the SCAC contest 70-57 on Friday night.

Schreiner scored the first bucket of the game but Southwestern quickly matched it, setting the tone for a dog fight in the first half. Southwestern posted the largest lead of the half, 11 points, seven minutes into the game. Schreiner fought back and the game headed into halftime tied at 33.

The game remained locked at 33-33 for the first five minutes of the second half, but Chase Kocher broke the stalemate with a pair of free throws. Schreiner evened the score and then took the lead on their next two possessions and never let the Pirates regain control. Each time the Pirates pulled within striking distance the Mountaineers rattled off a short scoring burst to pull just ahead until the 70-57 final.

Southwestern shot 36.8% from the floor and 31.3% from three- point range, being led by Michael Cantu's 18 points. The Pirates were just edged out on the boards 34-30 and committed 22 turnovers in the loss.

The Pirates fall to 6-16 on the year with the loss and 3-9 in the SCAC. They remain on the road to face Texas Lutheran University on Saturday at 4 p.m.
