Pirates fall on buzzer beater

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Loras took the ball the length of the court just six seconds after SU regained the lead and scored as the final buzzer sounded to defeat Southwestern 65-64.

Chase Kocher's jumper with just six second remaining seemed to be the game winner, but Loras inbounded the ball without a timeout and took it the length of the court as Ryan Coon hit the game winning layup just as the horn sounded.

Southwestern controlled the game early and led by seven five minutes into the game. Loras hung close, however, as SU took a slim two point lead, 32-30, into the locker room.

Loras scored the first points of the second half to tie the contest and capped off a 12-2 run in the first four minutes on a jumper by Coon to lead 42-34.

Southwestern continued to fight and finally regained the lead once again with 30 seconds remaining on a pair of free throws by Michael Cantu. Loras' Bobby Harmening took the lead back for Loras with 21 seconds left before Kocher went to work and started the series of events to close out the game.

The Pirates shot 38.6% from the floor and 30.8% from three point range while getting 26 points from the free throw line. Cantu led all scorers with 18 points while Kocher added in 17. Cantu was also the leading rebounder for SU, pulling down seven boards.

The loss drops SU to 3-8 on the year. They return home after the New Year to take on Schreiner in their second SCAC conference match so far this season. Game time is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, January 10th
