Free throw shooting Southwestern’s demise in loss to Whitworth

Spokane, Wash. – Southwestern shot 51% from the field and over 30% from three point range but fell 74-59 to Whitworth on Monday evening after going just 4-14 from the free throw line.

Whitworth scored the first basket of the game and never trailed, leading by as many as 12 twice in the first half before taking a nine point lead, 37-28 over Southwestern into the locker room.

Through the early part of the second half, Whitworth remained ahead but Southwestern quietly began to climb back in the game and got within two, 52-50, on Josh Tates' layup with 9:43 remaining.

After trading threes Whitworth outscored SU 7-0 in the next three minutes and 19-6 the rest of the game to hand Southwestern the 74-59 loss.

Blake Scott posted a double-double in the loss, leading SU with 10 boards while also posting 12 points. Sean Myers led the Pirates with 14 points. Whitworth's Dustin McConnell led all scorers with 18 points.

Southwestern outrebounded Whitworth 31-28 but committed seven more turnovers.

SU falls to 3-5 on the year while Whitworth improves to 5-2. They have one final game to cap off a crazy week of action, facing Wayland Baptist on Wednesday night in Georgetown. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
