Poor shooting first half dooms Pirates in conference opener

Poor shooting first half dooms Pirates in conference opener

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Southwestern held Trinity to only 21 first half points but managed just 14 as SU dropped their conference opener 55-47.

It took nearly seven minutes for Southwestern to get on the board as Trinity opened on a 7-0 run. Thankfully, SU's defense was sharp the first half as they clawed their way back and took just a seven point deficit into the break after shooting just 14% from the floor and making only four field goals.

The Pirates started the second half well and quickly pulled within three points, 22-19. Trinity stayed just out of reach for Southwestern, however, as SU was never able to get any closer.

Southwestern shot 24% from the floor for the game and was led by Michael Cantu who posted his first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, both team highs. Trinity's Robert Kitszinger led all scorers with 21 points. SU was strong defensively as they forced three more turnovers and were nearly equal in the rebounding battle.

The Pirates fall to 3-3 on the year and 0-1 in SCAC action while Trinity improves to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play. SU returns to the court on December 14th as they play their first of two games in Washington, facing Whitman College.
