Baseball Struggles In Loss To UMHB

BELTON, Texas — Southwestern baseball suffered another big offensive night by an opponent, surrendering 12 hits in an 11-1 loss to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders.

The Crusaders scored two runs in the first inning. After Southwestern walked the bases loaded, Warren Sammons and Ryan Farmer hit back-to-back RBI singles for the 2-0 lead. Mary Hardin-Baylor added two more runs in the third on a two-run home run by Hunter Jones. 

Southwestern broke through for its lone run in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly hit by Trent Raschke, scoring Henry Fisher, who led the inning off with a walk. 

Mary Hardin-Baylor's Kaden deBerardinis drove in Rhett Grosz on a sacrifice fly, and then Sam Muniga hit an RBI single for another pair of runs in the sixth. 

Southwestern surrendered another home run in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run blast by Farmer. Drake Herrera added another run in the inning, driving in Grosz on a sacrifice fly. 

Mary Hardin-Baylor scored two more runs in the eighth to trigger the 10-run rule and end the game. Jones hit his second home run of the game, and Grosz hit a walk-off single, scoring Caimyn Holiday. 

Maxwell Mims, James Vaquero, and Tate Winfield each had one hit for Southwestern. Jones and Farmer combined to hit 5-for-10 with six RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Crusaders. 

Southwestern drops to 8-12 with the loss. The Pirates will travel this weekend for a three-game conference series against Austin College starting on Friday with a doubleheader on Saturday.
