GEORGETOWN, Texas -- After losing Game 1 of its senior day doubleheader, the Southwestern University Pirates took their frustrations out on a quartet of first year Centenary pitchers, winning 16-2.
The Pirates opened the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles from Hayden Craig and Daniel Montgomery Jr. with Craig pulling the ball down the left field line and Montgomery poking it opposite field to put runners in the corners.
Cole Kelly drew a walk on four pitches, loading the bases with no outs on first-year starting pitcher Matt Parker.
Southwestern got on board with a grounder up the middle by Byron Dowdell II, reaching on a fielder's choice that put Kelly out at second but scored Craig. Colby Schmidt followed with another walk to load the bases with one out, ending Parker's day with Dawson Crosby relieving him.
Crosby immediately walked Stein and Hallmark on eight pitches, scoring Montgomery and Dowdell. Seth Sparks followed with a two-RBI double to left-center, giving the Pirates a 5-0 lead and ending Crosby's game with first-year Josh McLean taking over.
McLean surrendered a RBI-single up the middle to Chase Thinger, scoring Hallmark and taking the Pirates back to the top of their lineup in the bottom of the first with a 6-0 lead.
Craig grounded into a fielder's choice, putting Sparks out at second and leaving runners on the corners with two outs for Montgomery, who pulled the ball down the left-field line for a two-RBI double and an 8-0 lead.
Kelly launched a RBI-double off the centerfield wall, scoring Montgomery and prompting Centenary to bring in its fourth pitcher of the inning, turning to sophomore Joshua Gatewood, who walked Schmidt to load the bases.
Stein followed with a RBI-single to left-center, scoring Kelly for a 10-0 lead and Hallmark found the gap between first and second for a RBI-single to end Gatewood's afternoon with Cameron James taking the mound in relief.
Jase Amaya stepped in for Sparks, reaching on an error as first baseman Preston Ludwick was unable to scoop third baseman Chris Haggard's one-bounce throw to first, scoring Schmidt before getting out of the inning with the Pirates leading 12-0.
The Gents put two on in the top of the first but left both stranded.
Kelly hit a two-out double off the fence and Dowdell reached on an error, putting runners on the corners in the bottom of the second for Schmidt, who hit a RBI-double to left field. Another throwing error added another run, putting the Pirates up 15-0.
The Pirates opened the bottom of the third with a pair of infield singles and Dowdell loaded the bases with a one-out single, setting up Schmidt's sacrifice fly to center.
Centenary scored in the top of the fourth on a Allbritton sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Kozeny, who reached on a leadoff single and the Pirates stranded runners on second and third in the bottom of the inning.
The Gents added a run in the top of the sixth but Schmidt, making a rare appearance on the mound for senior day, held Centenary scoreless in the seventh to meet the requirements for hte mercy rule.
