Baseball Falls in Extra Innings

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University Pirates baseball team surrendered three runs in the top of the 11th inning, dropping a four-hour marathon against the University of Texas-Tyler Patriots 10-8.

Playing in a non-conference game, the Pirates went through 10 pitchers, giving young arms opportunities for game repetitions with only regular reliever Machi Horne going more than two innings.

Southwestern struck first on a two-out, two-RBI double from Colby Schmidt, scoring Hayden Craig and Brett Kendall, who reached on back-to-back walks to start the bottom of the first.

Matthew Thompson took over for Jordan Scott in the top of the second and gave up a single, hit batter, and walk before Rossiter put the Patriots on the board, reaching on a bases loaded fielder's choice, scoring Henry Sanchez.

The Patriots added two more in the top of the third on a Sanchez two-RBI single up the middle, scoring Blake Wilson and Josh Burns. Koba Kobayashi started the inning, surrendering a leadoff triple to Wilson and hit Burns before inducing a pop up from Welch and striking out Blake Maddox before giving up the Sanchez single.

Ruben Garcia started the fourth for the Pirates, inducing two quick fly outs before hitting Todd Roach with a pitch, giving up a RBI-single to Wilson, and a two-run home run to Burns to give the Patriots a 6-2 lead.

Southwestern scored two in the bottom of the inning with Seth Sparks hitting a RBI on a groundout to short stop. The Pirates had runners in the corners and Ethan Hallmark got a jump on the pitch, not giving UT-Tyler an opportunity for a double play. Chase Thinger followed that with a RBI-single up the middle, scoring Hallmark.

Luke Richards took the mound for the Pirates in the fifth, getting a three-up, three-down inning for the first time. Kole Kimberlin entered the game in the sixth, giving up a Wilson RBI-single. Southwestern answered with a RBI-double from Hallmark and RBI sacrifice fly from Seth Sparks.

Southwestern tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a Kendall RBI-single up the middle, scoring Craig and both teams went scoreless for the eighth, ninth, and 10th innings before the Patriots scored three runs off William Harp on three hits with one error.

With the loss, the Pirates drop to 17-12 on the season. Southwestern will host Trinity University in a three-day, three-game series from Friday, April 12 through Sunday, April 14.
