Pirates Drop Series to Texas Lutheran University

SEGUIN, Texas – The Southwestern University Pirates baseball team lost its road series against the Texas Lutheran University (TLU) Bulldogs, falling 10-8 in Game 3 to lose two of three.

Texas Lutheran put together three runs in the first inning, stringing together six consecutive singles after starting pitcher Colton Hunter got the leadoff hitter out, with Tyler Cauley picking up a two-RBI Infield single and Cole Irby getting a RBI-single to left field.

The Pirates got on board in the top of the second with Byron Dowdell II leading off with a double to left center and Ethan Hallmark knocking him in with a groundout to short stop.

Texas Lutheran got the run back in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly to center field by Spencer Brandt to score Cullen Motsinger.

Southwestern took a brief lead with six runs combined in the top of the fourth and fifth innings. Cole Kelly hit a RBI-double to right center in the fourth, scoring Daniel Montgomery Jr., who reached on a double down the left field line. Later in the inning, Hallmark knocked in Kelly on a fielder's choice with Colby Schmidt being thrown out at second for the incomplete double play.

The Pirates scored four in the top of the fifth with Dowdell hitting a RBI-single to right field with bases loaded. Schmidt followed by reaching on an error, scoring Kelly, Montgomery, and Dowdell for the 7-4 lead.

TLU responded with five runs and five hits in the bottom of the inning, all on singles for the 9-7 lead. Colon added an insurance run with a RBI-single to left field for TLU in the bottom of the sixth. The Pirates' Seth Sparks hit a RBI groundout to second base, scoring Schmidt in the eighth but the Pirates left two stranded in the ninth to end the game.

With the loss, the Pirates drop to 16-11 on the season and 5-4 in conference play. Southwestern will host Arlington Baptist tomorrow at 4:00 p.m., Texas-Tyler the next day at 6:00 p.m., and will resume conference play with a three-game series against Trinity University Friday through Sunday.
