Baseball Surrenders Big Inning in Ninth, Falls to Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas – In a reversal of fortune, it was the Southwestern University Pirates who were felled by a big final inning, losing to Schreiner University 8-7 in the second game of a three-game, two-day series.

In yesterday's conference opener, the Pirates scored six runs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat Schreiner. In the first game of today's doubleheader, Schreiner scored five in the bottom of the ninth, ending the game on a walk-off RBI by Dominick Garcia.

The Pirates got out to an early 4-0 lead, scoring the first run on a two-out passed ball, taking advantage of two walks, a wild pitch, and the passed ball.

Southwestern added three more in the third, leading off with two walks and scoring Daniel Montgomery Jr. on a passed ball, getting a RBI-double to left field from Ethan Hallmark, who scored on a RBI-single to right field from Ted Lobkowicz.

Schreiner got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth on a hit batter, and three walks.

Montgomery responded with a RBI-single to center in the top of the sixth, followed by another one from Schmidt and a RBI-double from Hallmark for a 7-1 lead.

Reece Hohhertz hit a RBI-double for Schreiner in the bottom of the inning, scoring Jeffrey Williams, and another in the eighth to cut the lead to 7-3.

Schreiner opened the bottom of the ninth with back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases, scoring on a Austin Contreras groundout to second. Trey Schwarz entered the game for starting pitcher Colton Hunter and walked another hitter and hit Williams, scoring another run.

Hohhertz hit a two-RBI single to tie the game and Dominick Garcia grounded out to third base, scoring Williams for the win.

Montgomery was 3-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored to lead the Pirates. Hallmark was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Hunter pitched 8.1 innings, giving up 11 hits and six earned runs with 11 strikeouts and four walks in a no-decision. Schwarz relieved him for 0.1 innings, giving up a hit, a walk, and two runs.
