Pirates Season Comes to a Close in Loss to Centenary

CLEBURNE, Texas - The Southwestern University baseball team saw their season come to a close as they fell to the Centenary Gents on Saturday evening at the SCAC Baseball Championship by the score of 6-3 at The Depot. 

The Pirates struck first in the fourth inning off a RBI single from senior Riley Wayland. Moments later, a Centenary error plated another run and Southwestern took a 2-0 lead. However, the Gent responded with two runs of their own to even the game back at two.

Southwestern moved ahead 3-2 in the sixth off a RBI single from sophomore Daniel Montgomery, Jr., but again, Centenary had a response, this time scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth to move ahead for good at 4-3.

The Pirates got runners on, but ultimately left 10 runners on base on the evening. The Gents added a pair of runs in the eighth inning and were able to close out the Pirates season with a 6-3 victory.

Six Gent pitchers were on the bump with Cole Lavergne (W, 6-4) earning the win in relief. Bryce Sinclair got the start for Southwestern, going 3.2 innings with Trey Schwarz (L, 1-1) and Montgomery coming in in relief.

Senior Ethan Hallmark was 1-for-2 with two runs scored while Wayland and Montgomery were each 1-for-3 with a RBI. Junior Colby Schmidt and freshman Seth Sparks each added hits while junior Cole Kelly had a pair of walks and a run scored.

The Pirates close the 2018 season with an 18-24 record under first year head coach JC Bunch. Four seniors will depart the program in Hallmark, Wayland, Jason McCormack, and Will Preston
