Baseball Drops Home Finale to Concordia Texas

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University baseball team dropped their home finale to the ASC Regular Season Champion Concordia Texas Tornados by the score of 6-1 on Thursday evening at Rockwell Field.

Concordia took the early 2-0 lead in the first, getting three consecutive hits with two outs. Freshman Jacob Frankel settled in and gave the Pirates six solid innings, striking out eight in the process and keeping a great offense off balance. However, the Tornados were able to stratch two more runs across in the top of the sixth, again with two outs, to increase the lead to 4-0.

Sophomore Byron Dowdell II got one back for the Pirates in the bottom half of the sixth with a RBI single to make it a 4-1 game, but Concordia used a pair of solo shots to move the lead to 6-1. The Pirates threatened in the seventh, getting the first two runners on and eventually bringing the tying run to the plate with the bases loaded, but the Tornados slammed the door shut to maintain the lead.

Junior Jordan Scott took over for Frankel (L, 2-2) in the seventh, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing two runs on three hits while Ruben Garcia finished the ninth off, getting one out.

Dowdell finished 2-for-4 on the day with a RBI while sophomore Daniel Montgomery Jr. was 1-for-4 with a run scored. Senior Riley Wayland was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk while Austin SmithColby Schmidt, and Colby Schmidt all added a hit.

Southwestern goes to 16-22 on the season and concludes the regular season tomorrow in Austin against Concordia at 7 PM. The Pirates will then keep a close eye on the Austin College-Texas Lutheran series to see if their season will continue into postseason play.
