#1 Tigers hold on for win over Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern gave the top team in the nation all they could handle at home Wednesday evening, falling 9-5 to #1 Trinity University.

Trinity drew first blood with one run in each of the first two innings, but Southwestern quickly evened the count with two runs in the second including one on an RBI single from Cole Kelly.

The Tigers answered with three runs in the top of the third thanks in large part to a two RBI double by Cormack. Down three, the Pirates loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half of the inning for Kelly. Kelly legged out the infield grounder to keep the double play from happening, driving home Seth Sparks while Hayden Craig took advantage of a TU error to score the second run of the inning and cut Trinity's lead down to one, 5-4.

Offenses cooled off as the sun set on the horizon allowing Trinity to hold onto a slight two run advantage, 6-4, through six innings. The Tigers tacked on one more in the seventh and two in the ninth while holding Southwestern's stout offense to just one run in the ninth to secure the win.

Jordan Scott suffered his first loss of the season on the night while Trinity's Tindall earned his first win on the mound.

Kelly led at the plate for Southwestern, driving in two runs on the evening. He also entered the game on the mound in the top of the third and threw 6.2 strong innings, allowing four runs on six hits.

The Pirates drop to 12-11 on the year while Trinity improves to 20-2. Southwestern returns to SCAC action this weekend as they head to Shreveport, LA for a three game series against Centenary beginning with a single game on Friday at 6 pm.
