Baseball Drops Weekday Home Matchup to Chicago

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University baseball team dropped a home Wednesday evening matchup to the University of Chicago by the score of 6-4 at Rockwell Field in non-conference play.

The Maroons plated three in the second and added a run in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. Southwestern responded with two in the bottom half of the fifth thanks to two out RBI singles from senior Jason McCormack and junior Cole Kelly.

Chicago increased their lead to 6-2 in the seventh, but Southwestern rallied in the eighth, getting a RBI double from sophomore Byron Dowdell II, who later scored on a passed ball to make it a 6-4 game.

The Pirates would load the bases in the ninth with one down, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the contest and gave Chicago a 6-4 victory.

Sophomore Bryce Sinclair (L, 0-1) got the start and took the loss for the Pirates while four different relievers took the mound. Sophomore Colton Hunter struck out three in three innings of work while junior Jordan Scott and freshman Jacob Frankel each allow no runs while Frankel struck out two.

Dowdell was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles while McCormack was also 2-for-4 with a double. Kelly, sophomore Daniel Montgomery Jr., freshman Seth Sparks, and sophomore Tyler Hull all had a hit.

The Pirates move to 6-9 overall and return to action on Saturday as they open a three game SCAC series at home with the University of Dallas. The series begins with a doubleheader at 1 PM.
