Pirates hold off Texas Lutheran, advance in elimination game

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Southwestern scored in four separate innings, including a run in the ninth, to eliminate Texas Lutheran, 4-3, in the SCAC Championship on Saturday.

The Pirates (21-20) will face Trinity at 7 p.m. in another elimination contest. The winner will face No. 8 Centenary in Sunday's championship round.

Southwestern plated a single tally in the second, third and fourth innings to stake claim to a 3-0 lead.

The Bulldogs picked up their first run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly.

Ethan Widoff and Byron Dowdell II started the final frame with back-to-back singles. Widoff then stole third base and came across the plate on a wild pitch to give the Bucs a 4-1 advantage.

Texas Lutheran threatened in the bottom of the panel.

After posting back-to-back singles, the Bulldogs received a run-scoring double from Keaton Boysen, to cut SU's lead to 4-2.

The Pirates then turned the ball over to Jacob Kendra, who came in and gave up a sacrifice fly, which trimmed the advantage to just one run. Kendra then induced a groundout and fanned the last batter, clinching the victory.

Jeremy Rice (5-5) picked up the win, as the right-hander allowed only one hit and a run in six innings of work. Kendra earned his first save of the campaign after retiring all three batters he faced.
