Southwestern drops twinbill to No. 12 Centenary on Saturday

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Southwestern University baseball team dropped both ends of a twinbill to No. 12 Centenary on Saturday at Shehee Stadium. The Gents claimed the opening tilt 7-3 and then earned a 12-7 victory in the nightcap to clinch the series.

Centenary (23-7, 8-4 SCAC) pounded out 32 hits in the two contests, while Southwestern (11-21, 6-6 SCAC) collected 22 knocks.

In the opening game, the Gents broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the sixth inning.

The Pirates managed one in the top of the seventh, but Centenary responded with two insurance tallies in the eighth to cap the scoring.

Michael Platz (0-2) took the loss in relief after giving up two runs on a pair of hits over 2.1 frames.

Southwestern picked up nine hits in the middle game of the series. Will Cates and Cole Kelly both logged a pair of safeties.

The Gents built an 8-1 lead through the first four innings of the series finale. However, the Bucs scored two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to pull within two runs.

Centenary exploded for four runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Jacob Kendra (1-4) was saddled with the loss after yielding eight runs (five earned) on nine hits over 3.2 panels.

The Pirates picked up 13 hits in the nightcap. Austyn Laird was 3-for-4 with a double and he drove in a run and scored three times. Ethan Luna also had three hits, including a triple. Cates hit his fifth home run of the season in the loss.

Southwestern will return home to host Texas-Tyler on Tuesday, April 12. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Rockwell Field.
