Schreiner walks off Southwestern in series opener on Friday, 4-3

KERRVILLE, Texas – Schreiner received a walk-off single from Marco Carreon in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Southwestern, 4-3, in the series opener Friday afternoon at Mountaineer Field.

The Mountaineers (4-9) started the decisive frame with Gio Datiz's leadoff single. After Datiz was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, he advanced to third on a groundout. Carreon then stepped to the plated and singled, which brought Datiz in for the final score.

The Pirates (3-12) started the scoring in the fourth, as Ethan Luna doubled and then moved to third on a wild pitch before Will Cates drove him in on a single.

Schreiner pulled even in the bottom of the fifth, as Sam Pistrui logged an RBI single.

Both teams went silent over the next two panels, but each plated a pair of runs in the eighth.

Ben Little posted a two-run single in the top of the stanza, which brought in Austyn Laird and Colten Shea.

The Mountaineers responded with two tallies in the bottom of the inning, as JC Kruczkowski recorded an RBI single, while Tye Ochoa tied up the game on a wild pitch.

Southwestern was retired in order in the ninth.

Caleb Allen (1-2) hurled a complete game, as he scattered seven hits and allowed three runs. Allen also struck out three and walked two.

Riley Wayland (0-1) took the loss after giving up a run on two hits in the final frame.

Laird led the Pirates at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance. Little was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while Cates finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.

The series will conclude Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
