Centenary sweeps doubleheader on Saturday to take series from Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University baseball team dropped a doubleheader Saturday to Centenary at Rockwell Field. The Gents won the opening game in 10 innings, 13-12, and clinched the series with a 5-2 win in the nightcap.

In the first game of the day, the Pirates (2-8) trailed 11-4 but scored five runs in the eighth inning and two more in the ninth to pull even.

However, the Gents (8-2) plated two runs in the top of the 10th to take a 13-11 lead.

In the bottom of the panel, Southwestern scored a run on a throwing error and had the tying run at third base before Centenary closed out the contest on a groundout.

The Pirates tallied 16 hits in the contest. Ethan Luna was 4-for-5 with two doubles, a homer and three RBIs. Will Cates and Ben Little each recorded three knocks and drove in two runs, while Austyn Laird was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and three RBIs.

In the nightcap, Kaleb Kirk went the distance and struck out nine to pick up the win for the Gents. The right-hander scattered seven hits and limited SU to two runs.

The rubber match was tied 2-2 in the top of the sixth, but Centenary pushed across three runs to take the lead for good.

Southwestern will close out its eight-game home stand on Friday, Feb. 26 in a non-conference tilt versus Concordia Texas. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
