Southwestern upended by Piedmont on Sunday, 13-11

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Piedmont overcame an 8-1 deficit to defeat the Southwestern University baseball team, 13-11, Sunday afternoon at Rockwell Field.

The Lions (4-1) scored a run in the top of the first inning to take an early lead.

However, the Pirates (1-6) answered with three in the bottom-half of the frame, four in the second and one more in the third to take a seven-run advantage.

Piedmont began to chip away in the fourth, scoring two runs to pull within five. The Lions took advantage of a Southwestern error in the fifth to plate fours runs and trim the lead to 8-7.

The visitors then erupted for four more in the following stanza to take an 11-8 lead.

The Pirates picked up two in the bottom of the sixth on Thomas O'Brien's RBI single and Ethan Luna's RBI groundout.

After each team scored runs in the eighth, Piedmont added the final tally in the ninth to cap the scoring.

The Lions racked up 19 hits on the day, while Southwestern collected 15 knocks.

Five Pirates tallied two hits, including Luna, who also had a double and drove in six runs.

Matt Vonderschmidt (3-0) picked up the win in relief, while Josh Thomas earned his fourth save of the year after holding Southwestern scoreless in the final 1.2 innings.

Michael Platz (0-1) suffered the loss after yielding four runs on seven hits over 1.1 panels. Tyler Polasek received a no-decision in his first collegiate start. The left-hander scattered seven hits and seven runs (two earned) over 4.2 frames. He also struck out five and walked four.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday night in the first of a three-game series with Centenary. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at Rockwell Field.
